Defining the Arts and Cultural Universe: Early Lessons from the Profiles Project

by Therese Filicko and Sue Anne Lafferty. Reviews the framework developed by the Profiles Project for understanding what is meant by "arts and cultural universe." This framework is then used to characterizing arts and cultural organizations in a national survey population and at ten sites for the purpose of defining which organizations to include in survey samples. Early data from the sites offer insights into the character of those local art and cultural communities. This paper is #7 in the Occasional Paper series at the Arts Policy and Administration Program at the Ohio State University. Presented at the Twenty-eighth Annual Conference on the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action(ARNOVA) in 1999. It was revised for inclusion in the Technical Report for the "Profiles Project." A revised version also appears in the Autumn 2000 issue of the Journal of Arts Management, Law and Society.
